Eating Well!


Make a healthy snack with your child.

  • Target Age:  3-6 
  • Learning Goals:  nutition, health

Materials

  • Fruits and/or vegetables

Directions

  1. With your child talk about the difference between “sometime” foods and “anytime” foods. Explain that “anytime” foods like fruits and vegetables are foods you can eat anytime since they keep your body healthy and strong. Some foods, like cookies are “sometime” foods that you can eat once in a while, a little bit at a time.
  2. Create a healthy snack with different fruits or vegetables. For instance, dip vegetables or fruit into low fat yogurt or peanut butter or make a colorful fruit or vegetable salad.
  3. While eating the snack, talk about the benefits of each food. For example, “Carrots give you lots of energy and helps your body grow strong!”
  4. Enjoy eating the healthy snack together! Yum!

Talk About It
Encourage your child to describe the color, taste, and texture of the different foods. Introduce vocabulary words, such as, crunchy, sweet, juicy, and delicious.


Take It Further

Next time you take a trip to the grocery store, point out all the colorful fruits and vegetables. See if you can spot different colored fruits and vegetables for each color of the rainbow!
